Maternity Session $165.00
I know firsthand how easy it is to feel, well, “less than Brazilian supermodel hot” while growing a baby. It’s strange–we ladies go to great lengths to hide our less-than-flat bellies. But when you’re pregnant, not only is it accepted but encouraged to show off that bump! What better way to memorialize this time in a woman’s life (and the life of her growing family) than to capture her at her glowing, pregnant best? If you haven’t heard of it, this phenomenon is called the Maternity Photo Session, and it’s a great opportunity to flex your photographic muscles and try something new!

Most of my pregnant clients ask me for my suggestions and opinion on what they should wear. I like to recommend a variety of outfits. One failproof item is a long, clingy dress in a bold color with bright accessories. If you got a more funky sense of style, don’t be afraid to use patterns! Another item to make sure to have on hand if your not shy is some sort of slightly see-through nighty or a men’s button up shirt. If your modest, wear clothes that make you feel beautiful and show off the bump–snugger outfits are better than loose ones. If the outfit is too loose, the bump won’t be well defined and the photos will be less flattering. If you are really wanting to show off the bump, make sure you bring a variety of scarves, fabrics, etc. so you can cover what you DON’T want to show in the photos (breasts and butt) and accentuate what you DO want to see (baby)! Another little hint wear nude colored underwear–it is easier to hide and makes for a more seamless look.
I like to capture poses that show the love between the couple and the love dad has for his future son or daughter! I photograph the couple just like I photography any couple in love–holding hands, talking, kissing, and having fun! I do try to make sure that mom is positioned with her bump to one side or another most of the time, that way you can best see the bump. I also like for one of her hands or perhaps the fathers’ hand to be on the top of the bump, so it looks like the baby is included in the photos. Make sure to have hand's manicured.

What preparations should I make?
The preparations are similar to any other photo shoot: just be prepared to look your best. It's a good idea to avoid any new or radical changes to your normal hygiene regimen just before the shoot, as new skin cleansing and hair care products could bring about unexpected results.
Being well rested will help, though it's sometimes difficult during pregnancy. Also eating light and healthy the day of the shoot is a good idea so you don't feel bloated or hungry. This will help you look your best. Please bring along to your maternity session a pair of black and a pair of white undergarments preferably strapless bra and boy-short style panties. If Daddy will be in the portraits a black and a white button up shirt or T-shirts works best. Avoid tight-fitting bands from maternity pants. These will leave pressure marks. You can also roll the band down at least an hour before your session. Also avoid sock lines by either wearing low cut socks or none at all.

When is the best time to photograph a pregnant woman?

I like to shoot maternity photos when a woman is between 7-8 months pregnant, depending on how she is carrying. You’re looking for that window of time when she is nice and rounded out, but not so large that she is uncomfortable walking around or sitting & standing for different shots. You also don’t want to wait too long–if you do, you’ll be more likely to be photographing a newborn than a maternity session! Another reason to photograph at around 7-8 months is so that the mom-to-be can display the photos at her baby shower and order prints to decorate the nursery.

Okay, we have a shoot date set up! Now what?

Answer: The best thing about this type of shoot is that there is really no right or wrong way to go about it, as long as mom feels comfortable and beautiful! Before the shoot, I recommend that you have your hair & makeup done that day to make you feel your best while being photographed. Some moms want to bare it all and capture shots of the full pregnant look, and some prefer to cover up. In either case, we will capture great shots. I prefer outdoor locations that are at least somewhat private–county parks and such where there are trails that are easily accessible without any rough terrain. Make sure to wears comfortable shoes or flip flops for this shoot. I also have a studio if you would rather have the studio look.
